Charts of Future Past - Before and After - Click to Enlarge Chart Images

Below are three of my recent posted charts before and after - side by side.

BP-Yen Sept 18-29 Daily Chart - Shows the completion of the Double Top and “M” pattern     Previous Post from Sept 18

GBP-Yen Sept 18-29 Daily Chart - Shows the completion of the Double Top and “M” pattern that is continuing to trade to the downside inside a nice trend channel.

GBP –USD Sept 18 Previous Post Daily Chart - Shows the Head and Shoulder Pattern not even completed     GBP –USD Sept 18 Daily Chart - Shows the Head and Shoulder Approaching Neck Line

GBP –USD Sept  18 – 29 Daily Chart - Shows the Head and Shoulder Pattern completing the formation that was in progress back on Sept 18 has now gone “to and through”  the “Neck Line”.  The question now is: Will the Sterling bounce and correct to retest the neckline, or continue to the 200% extension target of the Pattern… or go sideways..?

AUD-JPY Sept 23-29 4 Hour Chart – Triangle with Inverse Head and Shoulder Pattern worked out     Sept 23 2009 - AUD JPY Shows Triangle with Invesre Head and Shoulder Pattern

AUD-JPY Sept 23-29 4 Hour Chart – Triangle with Inverse Head and Shoulder Pattern worked out beautifully to the Downside as it now looks more like a Double Top and “M” formation – The previous post from September 23 is now complete! Price has now retraced quickly back to the trend line.

US Economy Going and Growing Up Fast? -  Not So… Fast!

The Consensus Range for Friday’s  US GDP  is -2.8 to 0.7, with a consensus number of -0.7%  growth . This is highly optimistic since last month’s GDP number came in at a negative -5.5%. The “rose colored glasses and windows” crowd would love to claim the worst is over.

Jobs is the Answer

The reality is that the jobless rate is still ugly and new jobless claims are still rising. Anecdotal  talk of extended benefits being pulled back may soon paint a inaccurate picture that the jobless rate could be artificially made to look better - sooner – as continuing unemployment claims will be dropping soon as benefits expire and people fall off the unemployment benefits list as “no longer seeking employment”.

S&P 500 test of 1,000 Imminent ? and then Lookout Below?

The S&P 500 is flirting with 1,000 – A significant psychological support – resistance level.

My previous post of July 16th showed the S&P 500 grinding towards the 956 neckline of a massive Inverse Head and Shoulder Pattern going back to January, and the Failed Head and Shoulder of the past few months.  That target was quickly achieved a few days later and promptly blasted up targeting the 1,000 mark.

S&P 500 - Test of 1000 - Head and Shoulders

S&P 500 4 Hour Chart (click to Enlarge)

This may indeed have been a significant short squeeze. If this 1,000 level is not significantly breached to the upside, then the weaker short positions that were just squeezed may have been removed – possibly clearing the way for a massive move down?

US Congress Returns to Work after “Santelli” Tea Parties

The Sunday morning news shows featured pundits and politicians squabbling about the “astro-turf” grass roots protests last week - and giving CNBC’s Rick Santelli the credit for “re-starting” the US “revolution”.  It is interesting to watch as the mainstream media attempts  to marginalize and dismiss the growing anger of the general taxpaying public aka: “the silent majority”. <– Watch this Spot!

Meanwhile - the US Congress Returns to Work

Isn’t it amazing how one political side calls the other “uncompromising” and then does exactly what they accuse of the other! A case in point is the unilateral “Cap and Trade” proposal. Democrat Henry Waxman says he will not compromise on the bill despite the obvious criticism that this would only force the creation of pollution - and jobs - outside of the US borders.

Euro - In the Zone ?

The ECB is squabbling about lowering rates to Zero - yet their continues to be open discussion of taking extra ordinary measures… Someting else to watch…

A Look at the Charts

The EUR-USD and USD-CHF normally display a direct inverse correlation.

A look at the Daily Charts above (click to Enlarge) of both of these may dispel any Euro strengthening for the time being as the USD-CHF seems to be trending higher and the Euro is Testing Support.

USD-CAD - Triangle in Play?

USD-CAD April 19, 2009 and Previous Post from April 12, 2009 (click to Enlarge)

My blog post last week on April 12 showed the Canadian Dollar testing support with a nicetriangle pattern that has re-appeared. That support was shattered the next day and the USD-CAD seems to be grinding it’s way further south for now.

Holiday Greetings to All - The Calendar is light this week - as it should be - and to give the volatile markets a much needed rest and break - but will the volatility calm down as the banks and corporations around the world turn off the office lights? A Happy Hanukkah to all celebrating the festival of lights.

Good News and Signs Emerge

The US Consumer is feeling more optimistic, and the President Elect continues to show he is working hard at putting together his team to address the US and World economic situation.

The Currencies React

At 8:30 the news hit the charts that the US GDP came in at the consensus number of -0.5% growth.

The Pound Sterling rose from 1.5000 to 1.5400 in an hours time!

The Dollar - Gives and Takes

The past few days have seen the US Dollar give back a small portion of it’s historic rally - save the Yen… This despite factors that fundamentally - “in normal times” - should have hammered the greenback. The biggest factor being the FOMC dropping rates to 1%, and GDP coming in an anemic 0.3%.

Jumbo Jets and Jobs Anyone?

Durable Goods in September were reported to be a positive 0.8% with expectations running as low as -3%. This was primarily attributed to aircraft orders. With the Delta and Northwest merger approved by shareholders - there may be a few “pre-owned” birds along with some stewardesses on the market. Jobless claims came in at a steady - unchanged 479,000 on Thursday - only to hear that American Express and Motorola were going to lay off a pfat part of their payroll.

Costa Rican Telemarketing @ the Beach?

Joke of the Day: What do you get when you put some laid off Airline workers, cellphone makers, and wall street types together at the unemployment line talking about pensions and vacations? Send me your punch line. (I’m thinking Quentin Tarantino for some reason)

Technically Speaking - More Patterns I See

The Canadian Dollar Setting Up Again?

 USD-CAD Symetrical Triangle

USD-CAD Symmetrical Triangle

appears to be setting up on the 60 minute chart as of 1:30am October 31. Fibonacci levels coincide with the potential price pattern targets at 1.2540 for the upside and 1.700 for the downside support level.

Look back at my previous posts from October 21 - 26 for a text book example of a triangle pattern completing quite nicely.

Greenspans Admits to Flawed Reality of Greeds Span

The Senate oversight committee with testimony from former chairman Greenspan, Treasury Secretary Snow, and SEC Commissioner Cox was barely covered by the networks. It amazes me that the pundits and judge Judy can talk over and over rule what could have been the most important testimony broadcast to date as to what happened and why there was so little oversight.   Given the fact that Tax payer dollars are being used - you would think the tax payers should be given the opportunity to listen to the testimony - un interrupted if they wanted to.  But no reason to bore the people with the facts from the sources directly - better we get some 4th party opinion to talk over the testimony in between commercials.

Looking for a Bottom? -  Catching A Falling ——

Last week is indicative of the type of headlines and panics worthy of a possible bottom. I’m usually looking for the scapegoat being handcuffed and paraded infront of  televsion cameras - last time I think it was Martha Stewart and some cable television guy …

However - this trader understands that most market bottoms usually come in with a thud, and I am just not convinced that we have heard it yet - although a 40 foot crater at the Pakistan Marriott is a telling sign - nothing for us to worry about…

Photo ops of the entire US Government represented by The Treasury, The Federal Reserve, The Speaker of the House, and the Senate - at the Presidents Invitation to…. spend 700 Billion to prop up a “house of cards”  that the president just recently learned was a bit bigger than his.

Currency Markets Acting Well Technically - Hypoyhetically - Not Speaking

Currency Traders with their heads in the sand and only watching the charts may be doing quite nicely, as the trend and momentum trading is nothing less than excellent…. There are other issues that are currently hypothetical that I will not delve in to, but the possibility of extremely unexpected surprises are possible that might affect the currency markets and the way many of us trade…
